Frequently asked questions:

Questions about the program?

Let's be clear: The vast majority of alcohol monitoring programs and devices are reliable and successful. They offer the participant the opportunity to stay productive, maintain family ties, and steer clear of custodial punishment. Overall, Continuous Alcohol Monitoring devices work, and work well. But, they are not perfect (no technology is) and more often than not, it is the program participant who creates the situation resulting in a non-compliance allegation, often through lack of understanding of the issues involved. We've seen that in dozens of court cases. We are here to change that situation.

Course Requirements:

Can this be used in court?
The course itself is educational — it does not offer legal evidence or medical advice.
However, many participants provide their certificate to their lawyer, probation officer, or judge as a sign of good faith. It shows you’ve made a serious effort to understand your responsibilities and avoid mistakes. Some lawyers recommend, or even require, their clients to complete the course.

Will this help if I already got a violation?
No — But it may help prevent more...
While this course can’t undo a past violation, it can help you understand what happened and show that you’re taking proactive steps to stay in compliance. It won’t guarantee any outcome, but it shows that you’re taking your responsibilities seriously.

Is this course required by the court or my monitoring agency?
No - This course is not mandated by any court or agency.

It's an optional educational resource designed to help you understand your alcohol monitoring device and protect yourself from false positives, misunderstandings, or misuse.

Do I need court or probation approval to take this course?
No - This course is voluntary and independent.
You can enroll and complete it on your own. However, some participants choose to share their certificate with their lawyer, probation officer, or judge as a sign of good faith and demonstrate proactive effort.

Will this course help in court?
No - But it may help support your credibility in legal proceedings.
While the course itself is not a legal defense, some lawyers use completion certificates to show a client is proactively engaged and serious about compliance.

Course information:

Do I have to complete the whole course?
No — only the lessons that apply to you.
The program is designed to be flexible. If you’re only using an ignition interlock or wearing a transdermal monitor, you don’t need to complete sections about other devices. Some of the important lessons are required. However, we recommend reviewing any topics related to medical conditions, environment, or daily use, since these can affect anyone. The more you know,  the better you are prepared...

What devices does this cover?
The program covers the major types of alcohol monitoring devices, including:
  • Ignition Interlock Devices (IID)
  • Portable Breath Alcohol Testers
  • Transdermal Ankle Monitors
It also addresses general fuel cell  technology used in most monitoring systems.
Please note: Devices and technology are always evolving.
While we cover core principles and known issues, we don’t make claims about specific device models or guarantee how your individual device will perform.

What if I don’t drink - do I still need this course?
Yes - Even non-drinkers can face false-positive violations.
Medical conditions, household products, environmental or occupational exposures can create unforeseen issues. Understanding how your device works is your best defense.

Is the program confidential?
Yes - your participation is private.
We do not share your information with the court, your monitoring agency, or any third parties. Your progress and certificate are for you to use however you wish.

Can I take this program anonymously?

Yes - you may register using only your first name and email address.
However, if you're planning to share your certificate with your lawyer, monitoring officer or the court, you’ll need to use your real name so we can produce your Certificate of Completion.

How long does the course take?
The full course takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete.
But it largely depends on you... You don't need to complete all the modules, only the ones that apply to you. Also, you don’t need to finish it all at once.
Plus, if you want, there are many optional bonus articles and videos that you can view to get hours of further useful information. You learn as much as you need, at your own pace.

Can I access the course on my phone or tablet?
Yes - the course is mobile-friendly
It can be accessed securely on any device with internet access.

What if I have a technical issue?
Just reach out to us during North American (Central Time) office hours (0900-1700).
If you experience a problem accessing your course or certificate, please contact us at [email protected]

Will I get a Certificate of Completion when I’m done?
Yes - You’ll receive a personalized certificate of completion
Once you’ve finished all the required course lessons, you can download your Certificate of Completion or email it directly to your lawyer or probation officer.

Very important information:

Is this a replacement for legal advice or treatment?
No - Not at all...
You should treat myCAMprogram as an educational tool. It does NOT replace legal counsel, court-ordered treatment, medical advice, therapeutic or monitoring service instructions. You must always follow the court's orders, and your lawyer's and monitoring programs provider’s guidance.

Does this course override the rules of my probation or court order?
No - This course does not replace or alter your official program requirements.
Always follow your court or agency’s instructions first.

Will this course help me stay out of trouble?
It can - Many participants find it helps reduce stress and improve their confidence.
While we can’t guarantee outcomes, this course teaches you how to avoid common mistakes, understand your device, and protect yourself from accidental violations.

What if I get a false positive result?
1. False positives can happen—whether through breath tests or transdermal (ankle) monitors.
Monitoring devices, whether breath-based or transdermal, aren’t flawless. Fuel cell technology has known performance limitations and can sometimes produce results that don’t reflect actual alcohol consumption. Any electronic device can malfunction. Also, the review of your data is open to individual interpretation. This course helps you understand how these devices work, what can go wrong, and how to respond when something doesn’t add up.
2. Data can still be misinterpreted by your monitoring agency or probation officer.
Mistakes can and will happen. This program can not prevent a device from malfunctioning, nor can it prevent reported data from being misinterpreted by your monitoring agency or probation officer. What is can provide you is an understanding of how these devices work, how they can give false readings, and what steps you can take to proactively protect yourself.
3. This course is educational in nature and does not provide legal representation or case-specific advice.
If you violate the terms of your monitoring program, whether intentionally or not, you are solely responsible for the consequences. We encourage you to consult with your lawyer or supervising authority immediately.
4. Participation in this course does not shield you from penalties if you violate your monitoring agreement.
We provide information and support, but compliance is your responsibility.

Will this course show me how to “beat” or “trick” the device?
NO - Absolutely NOT!
This program is designed to promote safety, accuracy, and accountability. It does not teach or encourage you to tamper with or bypass your monitoring device. Tampering with, cheating or bypassing your device is a violation of your monitoring conditions and will subject you to further penalties or sanctions.

Will I learn how to challenge a test result?

No - We don’t provide legal strategies or case-specific advice.
But you will learn the science behind alcohol testing, the potential for false positive results, and how to collect helpful information in case your results are ever questioned.

Personal Breath Alcohol Testers - Optional protection and peace of mind

Some people like to use their own small breath tester along with their monitor. This is optional, but it can be very helpful. A personal tester lets you check yourself quickly, so you know where you stand before any official test. Saving these results can also help prove that you are following your program rules.
We suggest using BACtrack breath testers because we have tested them ourselves. They are easy to use, reliable, and accurate. We are not paid by BACtrack, and we are not connected to the company in any way. We recommend them only because they worked well in our tests. Using one is not required, but it can give you extra peace of mind and help you show that you are staying compliant.
