Before entering the forensic field, Jan served as a police officer and primary care paramedic, giving him a unique, front-line perspective on both investigative practices and medical issues affecting alcohol testing. His forensic work bridges law enforcement, science, and courtroom application, making him a trusted resource for attorneys, forensic professionals, and investigative journalists alike.
He served as the principal technical advisor to The New York Times during its landmark investigation into breath testing reliability and continues to consult with legal professionals throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Jan is also the founding editor of Counterpoint - The Journal of Science and the Law — a publication dedicated to the intersection of forensic science and legal practice.
